The Skilled Worker route lets people work in the UK for an employer that is licensed to sponsor them. It uses a points system, but unlike some other countries, most of the points are not optional. Here is how it works.
The 70 points you need
| Requirement | Points | Can it be traded? |
|---|---|---|
| A job offer from a licensed sponsor | 20 | No |
| A job at the right skill level | 20 | No |
| English language ability | 10 | No |
| Salary (or another permitted option) | 20 | Yes, within set rules |
Reaching 70 points is necessary but does not guarantee approval. Financial, suitability and evidence requirements apply separately.
Skill level
Most new applicants now need a job at RQF level 6 or above, which broadly means graduate-level work. Some medium-skilled jobs are only open where a specific list-based exception applies, so the exact job matters.
Salary
The standard route needs a salary of at least £41,700 a year, and at least the going rate for the occupation. Lower thresholds can apply in specific cases, such as new entrants, certain PhD holders and jobs on the Immigration Salary List, where the minimum falls to around £33,400 to £37,500 depending on the category. These figures were current when we last checked and may change.
English
For first applications made on or after 8 January 2026, English at level B2 across all four components is generally required.
What about care worker roles?
Overseas recruitment into care worker roles has closed to new applicants since July 2025, with limited transitional arrangements for people already in the UK. If you work in care, talk to us about current options for you.
What this means for you
- You need a sponsor first. Without a job offer from a licensed employer, you cannot apply.
- Your job and salary must both qualify. Check both before applying for jobs.
- Your qualification evidence and English proof must be ready early.
