A visa interview can feel frightening, but it is usually a short conversation to check one thing: does your story make sense, and is it true? If you prepare well and tell the truth, you are already in a strong position.
What officers are looking for
- Genuine purpose. Do you clearly understand why you are going and what you will do?
- Consistency. Do your answers match your documents and application?
- Funding. Can you explain how your studies or stay will be paid for?
- Plans. Do you have a realistic plan for what comes next?
How to prepare
- Know your file. Re-read your SOP, offer, financial documents and CV so nothing surprises you.
- Practise aloud. Practise with a friend or with us. Saying answers out loud makes them natural.
- Keep answers short and direct. Answer the question you were asked, then stop.
- Explain your sponsor. Know who is paying, their work and their relationship to you.
- Bring your documents in order. Carry originals and copies in a clear folder.
Handling difficult questions
If you do not understand a question, ask politely for it to be repeated. If you do not know an answer, say so honestly instead of guessing. Never memorise a script word for word, because it sounds unnatural and falls apart under follow-up questions.
On the day
- Arrive early and dress neatly.
- Stay calm, polite and confident.
- Make eye contact and speak clearly.
- Tell the truth every time.
